A Message from our CEO:
One year ago, we publicly launched Pioneer Clean Fleet Solutions with a simple idea: heavy duty fleets should have a practical path to low carbon technologies that can create immediate cash savings, with tailored programs keenly focused on the fleet’s operational success.
Prior to our launch, we evaluated operationally proven technologies that would deliver attractive savings to customers. The answer was right under our feet. The U.S. is the #1 global producer of natural gas, and #4 in proven reserves. The fuel is abundant, domestic, and not impacted by scarcity in refinery capacity. Renewable natural gas can be used or blended to drive additional fuel price savings and drastic carbon emissions reductions.
Natural gas powertrains for heavy duty trucks and buses have existed for decades in the U.S. and abroad. Domestically, over 100,000 trucks and buses are running are powered by CNG today. Take a look at the refuse trucks, transit buses or UPS Class 8 tractors in your region. Many are already running on natural gas. These commercial fleets that have transitioned their vehicles to natural gas have been insulated nearly completely from crude oil volatility spurred by geopolitical turmoil.
Looking abroad, China and India are each putting 10x the annual volume of natural-gas powered heavy trucks and buses on the road as the United States. Why? Because natural gas is cheaper than liquid fuels, even if it’s imported. The utilization of natural gas-powered trucks has successfully helped to stabilize the cost of movement of goods in their economies. These trucks also have lower emissions than diesel, especially relevant for their densely populated cities.
Here in North America, the technology works at scale today and continues to get even stronger. The recently launched Cummins X15N big bore engine allows for true diesel-like performance and has been perfected for over the road Class 8 applications. Major truck OEMs such as Daimler Truck and Paccar have homologated the X15N and service intervals are now harmonized with typical diesel cycles. On the fueling side, there are over 1,500 public fueling stations dispensing natural gas and on-vehicle fuel storage systems can now provide over 1,000 miles of range between refueling. Fleets can also use mobile refueling technology which allows for onsite fueling with no permanent infrastructure commitment.
Our premise is straightforward: fleets shouldn't have to become natural gas experts simply to take advantage of natural gas fuel savings. Pioneer’s role is to quickly understand each customer's operations, identify where natural gas technology makes financial and operational sense, and bring together the truck, financing, fueling, maintenance and deployment strategy needed to make the transition work.
It may not work everywhere in your operations, but as we talk to more and more customers, it is absolutely clear that most fleets can generate exceptionally strong savings somewhere in their existing network operations using natural gas.
If you are operating Class 8 trucks today as a private carrier, or a for-hire carrier with dedicated customer routes, we believe now is the time for you to evaluate how natural gas can reduce costs and risk in your fleet operations. The technology works today and the savings are real. Our customers are seeing it, and they were realizing savings well before recent spikes in diesel prices.
Over-the-road fleets in the U.S. do not have to be tied to crude oil, refineries, and geopolitics. There is a proven way today to reduce costs, risks, and ultimately, prices for American consumers. A year into this journey, our mission is clearer than ever:
Partner with fleets to remove the adoption barriers, reduce the uncertainty, and give them another choice away from the status quo.
To our customers, partners, suppliers and team members who have helped us build Pioneer—thank you. We're proud of what we've built together, and we're just getting started.
For those fleets we haven’t met yet: we look forward to connecting this year as soon as you’re ready.
If you are interested in more information or Pioneer’s Rapid Fleet Assessment, please send us a note and let us help explore where and how natural gas could seamlessly fit into your existing operations.
Let’s go win together.
